KEWEENAW COUNTY

Copper Harbor School (1850)
LOCATION:  346 Gratiot (aka US-41), Copper Harbor in Grant Township

Current Use:  School for pre-K through 8th grades
In addition to being Michigan’s northernmost school, the Copper Harbor School is one of only 20 actively operating one-room schools in Michigan.

Rathbone (aka Eagle Harbor) School (1853-1872)
LOCATION:  Corner of Center and Third Streets in Eagle Harbor in Eagle Harbor Township
This school is a Keweenaw Heritage Site.  It was designated a Michigan Historic Site on December 10, 1971 and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.  

Current Use:  Museum

KENT COUNTY

Myers School District No. 9 FR – Sparta-Algoma Townships
LOCATION:  16 Thirteenth Street (corner of Division and 13th Street), Sparta
Current Use:  Unknown

Bowne Twp District No. 1 School (1859-1943)
LOCATION:  9402 Alden Nash Avenue (aka M-50)
At Southeast corner of Alden Nash & 84th Avenue
Michigan Historic Site:  July 15, 1999
Current Use:  Bowne Township School Museum

Vergennes District No. 1 – Alton School (1873)

Three miles north of Lowell on 3 Mile Road (south side of road)
From the intersection of Lincoln Lake Road and 3 Mile Road, turn east and go about a quarter of a mile.

Current Use:  Private Residence

Vergennes District No. 11 - McPherson School (1861)

LOCATION:  1573 Parnell, Lowell in Vergennes Township
On Southwest corner of Parnell and Downes Roads  on the west side of the road
Michigan Historic Site:  April 23, 1985
Current Use:  Unknown

Moseley School (1919)
LOCATION:  Southeast corner of Lincoln Lake Road & 4 Mile Road, Lowell in Vergennes Township
Michigan Historic Site:  August 22, 1985
Current Use:  Private Residence

Fallasburg School - Vergennes District No. 1 FR School (built 1867-1979)
LOCATION:  Fallasburg Pioneer Village, 13944 Covered Bridge Rd. Lowell
From Lowell – take Lincoln Lake Ave north to Fallasburg Park Drive NE then right onto Covered Bridge Rd NE – drive through the Fallasburg Covered Bridge (over the Flat River) and you have arrived at the Fallasburg Pioneer Village.  The school is on the left side of the road.  

Current Use:  Museum operated by the Fallasburg Historical Society. This is a Michigan Historic Site.

KALKASKA COUNTY

Crawford(Excelsior District No. 1)  School (built 1875)
LOCATION:  5521 M-72 NE, Kalkaska
(about 8 miles east of Kalkaska on M-72)
Current Use:  School for K-8 grades

This school is one of only 20 actively operating one-room schools in Michigan.  

Masten School
LOCATION:  On Valley Road just east of Kellogg Rd, Rapid City
(Southeast of Rapid City in Clearwater Township)
Current Use:  Private Residence

Banner Hill (aka Palmer) School
LOCATION:  Southwest corner of Golden Rd and M-72 in Kalkaska Twp
Current Use:  Private Residence






ISABELLA COUNTY

Bohannon Schoolhouse (built 1901)
LOCATION:  Central Michigan University Campus (southwest corner of Preston and West Campus Drive)
The school was originally located in Jasper Township, near Midland.  It was moved to the CMU campus in 1970. 
Current Use:  Museum

Little Red Schoolhouse

LOCATION:  311 Dearing Drive, Shepherd
(behind the Elementary School)
The schoolhouse museum is open for visitors during Shepherd’s annual Maple Syrup Festival which is held in April.

Chivington or White School (?-1954)
LOCATION:  Northwest corner of Pickard Road (aka M-20) and Loomis Road in Section 9, Chippewa Township
Current Use:  Unknown

Leaton School (?-1964)
LOCATION:  Southeast corner of Leaton Road and Beal City Road in Section 29, Denver Township
Current Use:  Former Church

HOUGHTON COUNTY

Thank you,  Lynette Webber (NPS Calumet Visitor Center) for all your help in locating one-room schools in the greater Keweenaw Peninsula vicinity.  I am looking forward to a return visit to this area and hunting the rest of them down!

Also, I wish to extend my thanks to LuAnn Hayrynen of Houghton County Equalization Department for her assistance in confirming and identifying some of the one-room schools.  

Paradise School (circa 1890)
LOCATION: 42989 Paradise Road, Chassel
From US-41 north of Chassel turn west onto Massie Road for about 2 miles to Paradise Road. The school is on the southwest corner of Paradise Road (aka C-102) and Upper Massie Road.
Current Use: Vacant

Pike River School (1910-193)
LOCATION: 39487 Pike River Road, near Chassel
From US-41 in Chassel, turn west on 5th Street – which becomes Chassel-Painesdale Road (aka C-540) and go for about 2 miles to Paradise Road. Turn south on Paradise Road for 2-3 miles. The school will be on the west side of the road at the intersection of Lower Pike Road and Pike River Road.
Current Use: Vacant

Liminga School (1911-1958)
LOCATION:  14010 Liminga Rd, Atlantic Mine (Houghton)
From Houghton go north on Canal Road to Liminga Road - turn west for about 2.5 miles – the school is on the north side of the road
Current Use:  Stanton Township Hall

Unknown School
LOCATION:  9966 East Lake 13 Road (about 2-3 miles south of Sidnaw)
According to locals, they had family who attended school here at this log structure. Perhaps it was used as a temporary school because records at the Houghton County Assessor's Office indicate it has always been a private residence.   
Current Use:  Private Residence

Vandenplas-Bennett School (1923)
LOCATION:  9870 East Lake 13 Road, Sidnaw
According to Houghton County Assessing Records, this one-room school was built using the lumber of the second school in Sidnaw which was built in 1898-99.
Current Use:  Private Residence

Salo School (1905-1945)
LOCATION: 54351 N Salo Road, Hancock
From Hancock, take US-41 to Lake Anne Road (aka H-15) which turns into Salo Road. The school is on the left side of the road between Mattson Road and H-14 near Lily Creek.
Current Use:  Privately Owned

Jacobsville School
LOCATION: 27260 East Red Rock Road, Jacobsville
8 Grade School
Current Use: Community Heritage Center

Sarazin School
LOCATION: 47452 North Bootjack Road in Torch Lake Township
Current Use: Privately Owned
While we were photographing the school, a woman stopped by and said her family (I believe an uncle) owned the school. She provided the name “Sarazin” but did not know much more than that.

Onnela School (1910-1942)
LOCATION: 14371 Coles Creek Road, Atlantic Mine in Stanton Township
Current Use: Privately Owned – perhaps storage building

McKinley School (1904-1930's)
 
LOCATION: Houghton County Historical Museum, 53150 M-26, Lake Linden
Current Use: Building was dismantled in 1964 but the school bell was donated to (and is on display) at the Houghton County Historical Museum Complex in Lake Linden   

Trap Rock Valley School (1914-1940)
LOCATION:   Houghton County Historical Museum, 53150 M-26, Lake Linden
Current Use:  Museum - part of the Houghton County Historical Museum Complex in Lake Linden.

Bates School (1884)
  
LOCATION:  6054 Bates Road (just north of M-72 in Acme Township)
Current Use:   Vacant

Cedar Creek (District No. 1) School (1882-1950)
     
LOCATION:  5020 Fife Lake Road (aka CR 605) in Union Township
(Southwest corner of Fife Lake Road and Cedar Creek Road)
It was designated a Michigan Historic Site (MHS) on October 27, 1983 as “Fife Lake-Union District No 1 Schoolhouse” and listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) on August 27, 1987.  
Current Use:  Union Township Hall and Michigan Historic Site in 1983

Hodge School (1874)
LOCATION:  6970 M-113 (corner of M-113 and Hodge Rd in Fife Lake Township)
Current Use:  Private Residence

Old Red Schoolhouse #5
LOCATION:  Interlochen Center for the Arts Campus, 4000 Highway M-137, Interlochen in Green Lake Township
(Notice the separate entry doors – one for the boys and one for the girls)
Current Use:  Historic Museum

Maple Grove School (1896-1958)
LOCATION:  11480 Center Rd (aka M-37 in Peninsula Township)
Six miles north of Traverse City 
Current Use:  It serves as a wine tasting room.

Old Mission School (1853-1955)
LOCATION:  18328 Old Mission Road, Old Mission in Peninsula Township
(across the street from the log church)
Current Use:  Private residence- historical marker by road (2015 it was gone)

Bower's Harbor School (1858-1955)
LOCATION:  Corner of Neahatawnata & Kroupa Road in Peninsula Township
Current Use:  Private residence

McKinley School (1862-1955)
LOCATION:  Northwest corner of Center (M-37) and McKinley Roads in Peninsula Township
Current Use:  Private residence

Ogdensburg School (1898-1955)
LOCATION:  16213 Center (M-37) Road in Peninsula Township
(West side of road)
Current Use:  Private residence


Stoney Beach School (1859-1955)
LOCATION:  9160 Montague Road in Peninsula Township
(Northwest corner of Center & Montague Roads)
Current Use:  Private residence

Hesler (or Hessler) Log House 
LOCATIONLighthouse Park, 20500 Center (M-37) Road in Peninsula Township
According to the State of Michigan Historic Site sign, the Hessler Log House served many purposes over the years - one of which was a school.  In 1992, the log house was moved from its original location (14 miles south of the Park along the eastern shore of the peninsula) to the Lighthouse Park where it was restored. 
Current Use:  Museum – furnished as a home             

American Union Sunday School & Chapel (1893)
LOCATION:  11779 Cedar Run Road (just before Cedar Valley Road)
It is a Long Lake Township Historical building.
Current Use:  Cedar Run Community Building.

Joseph Black School (1893-1955)
LOCATION:  1000 Hammond, Traverse City
(corner of Hammond and Three Mile Road)
Current Use:  Business - a chiropractor office.

Rice School
LOCATION:   2525 M-37 (south of Traverse City in Blair Township)
(corner of M-37 and Nimrod Road)
Current Use:  It was a gift/antique shop - out of business 

Yuba School (1870-1964)
LOCATION:  5825 Yuba Rd on the southeast corner of Yuba Road & US-31 in Acme Township
A second room was added in 1901. 
It was designated a Michigan Historic Site on May 10, 1990 as “East Bay Township School District No. 2"
Current Use:  Historic Museum

Dunn School #4 (????-1956)
LOCATION1979 Silver Lake Rd (aka CR 633), Traverse City
(Southwest corner of Silver Lake Rd and Secor Rd in Garfield Twp)
Current Use:  Private Residence

Stricker School #1
LOCATION:  Northeast corner of Cedar Run and Barney in Long Lake Twp
(west of Traverse City)
Current Use:  Private Residence
