HOUGHTON COUNTY

Thank you,  Lynette Webber (NPS Calumet Visitor Center) for all your help in locating one-room schools in the greater Keweenaw Peninsula vicinity.  I am looking forward to a return visit to this area and hunting the rest of them down!

Also, I wish to extend my thanks to LuAnn Hayrynen of Houghton County Equalization Department for her assistance in confirming and identifying some of the one-room schools.

Paradise School (circa 1890)
LOCATION: 42989 Paradise Road, Chassel
From US-41 north of Chassel turn west onto Massie Road for about 2 miles to Paradise Road. The school is on the southwest corner of Paradise Road (aka C-102) and Upper Massie Road.
Current Use: Vacant

Pike River School (1910-193)
LOCATION: 39487 Pike River Road, near Chassel
From US-41 in Chassel, turn west on 5th Street – which becomes Chassel-Painesdale Road (aka C-540) and go for about 2 miles to Paradise Road. Turn south on Paradise Road for 2-3 miles. The school will be on the west side of the road at the intersection of Lower Pike Road and Pike River Road.
Current Use: Vacant

Liminga School (1911-1958)
LOCATION:  14010 Liminga Rd, Atlantic Mine (Houghton)
From Houghton go north on Canal Road to Liminga Road - turn west for about 2.5 miles – the school is on the north side of the road
Current Use:  Stanton Township Hall

Unknown School
LOCATION:  9966 East Lake 13 Road (about 2-3 miles south of Sidnaw)
According to locals, they had family who attended school here at this log structure. Perhaps it was used as a temporary school because records at the Houghton County Assessor's Office indicate it has always been a private residence.
Current Use:  Private Residence
If you know anything about this building being used as a school, please leave a comment following this post.

Vandenplas-Bennett School (1923)
LOCATION:  9870 East Lake 13 Road, Sidnaw
According to Houghton County Assessing Records, this one-room school was built using the lumber of the second school in Sidnaw which was built in 1898-99.
Current Use:  Private Residence

Salo School (1905-1945)
LOCATION: 54351 N Salo Road, Hancock
From Hancock, take US-41 to Lake Anne Road (aka H-15) which turns into Salo Road. The school is on the left side of the road between Mattson Road and H-14 near Lily Creek.
Current Use:  Privately Owned

Jacobsville School
LOCATION: 27260 East Red Rock Road, Jacobsville
8 Grade School
Current Use: Community Heritage Center

Sarazin School
LOCATION: 47452 North Bootjack Road in Torch Lake Township
Current Use: Privately Owned
While we were photographing the school, a woman stopped by and said her family (I believe an uncle) owned the school. She provided the name “Sarazin” but did not know much more than that.

Onnela School (1910-1942)
LOCATION: 14371 Coles Creek Road, Atlantic Mine in Stanton Township
Current Use: Privately Owned – perhaps storage building

McKinley School (1904-1930's)

LOCATION: Houghton County Historical Museum, 53150 M-26, Lake Linden
Current Use: Building was dismantled in 1964 but the school bell was donated to (and is on display) at the Houghton County Historical Museum Complex in Lake Linden

Trap Rock Valley School (1914-1940)
LOCATION:   Houghton County Historical Museum, 53150 M-26, Lake Linden
Current Use:  Museum - part of the Houghton County Historical Museum Complex in Lake Linden.

  1. I have two laminated certificates of the completion of lessons and accomplished examination in the Business and High School Edition of the Palmer Method of Business Writing Advanced Course. They are certificates with official gold seals awarded for superior ability to Elsie M. Pietila on May 28, 1926 and April 1927. Elsie was born and raised at 264 Franklin Street, Laurium, Michigan; attended Calumet High School; married Robert Nordstrom of Centennial Heights, moved to Southfield, Michigan and retired as a department manager at JL Hudsons. She returned to her home in Laurium in 1971 with her husband Robert where she lived until 1994, when she left to reside with her daughter in Royal Oak, Michigan. Elsie passed away in 2002. She played a very active role in the Keweenaw Historical Society and Faith Lutheran Church. She was known throughout her life for her beautiful handwriting and stalwart spirit. I wish to donate these certificates to you as momentos, if you can find a place for them.
